If written and verbal communications are next-door neighbors, the neighborhood in which they live is nonverbal communication.

We say this because, even though nonverbal communication by definition doesn't involve the use of words, it's still the most powerful form of communication.

Allow us to demonstrate.

Say the following sentence out loud several times, each time placing emphasis on a different word:

"I didn't say she could have my pastrami sandwich."

Depending on which word we emphasize, the tone of the statement changes. And tone is one aspect of nonverbal communication.

Another is body language. When we're talking to someone and they suddenly cross their arms over their chest and take a step backward, that definitely sends a signal: something has caused this person to feel the need to close into themselves.

Smiles and frowns also send signals, as do other facial expressions like raised eyebrows, a wrinkled nose, and even the lamentable duck face.

And let's not forget about gestures. Ever seen someone dismiss something with a wave of the hand, without saying a word?

Volume is another example of nonverbal communication. Is the person yelling? Are they writing in all caps with a bunch of explanation points at the end? Even if we don't understand the words, when someone is excited about something, we can tell.

In fact, we pick up on a lot of the nonverbal stuff without even realizing it. An average human can speak about 120-150 words per minute, but our amazing human brains have the capacity to process up to 500 words per minute. So what are we doing with all of that processing capability while someone is talking? Why, we're interpreting their nonverbal communication cues, of course. And we're forming our own impressions of the message we're receiving.

Now we're not saying that humanity should just give up on words and use gestures and random bouts of yelling to communicate with one another. Clearly that's not a good idea.

But when it comes to communicating, it's important to remember that, although the words we use contain the information and data we're trying to impart, the nonverbal message we're sending is also being received, loud and clear.
